A structured settlement is a cash payout to a plaintiff in a lawsuit that can occur over time. Unlike lump sum payments, there is a period of time, which is often equivalent to the duration of the plaintiff’s life. The payments take the form of a lifetime annuity.
There can also be more detail applied to the payments, such as giving a portion of the total amount up front and then beginning payments for the balance. Or, the payments can be weighted differently. * Divorce - Divorce constitutes the legal dissolution of a marriage. If a divorce settlement is agreed upon by both sides, it is possible to have an uncontested divorce. Uncontested cases are much simpler and are completed more quickly than contested divorces. In a contested divorce, the married couple has not agreed to a settlement and requests that the court decide how the marital assets should be separated. Many states encourage couples in contested divorce situations to see a mediator before coming before the court. It is the job of the mediator to negotiate with both sides to try to come to an agreement before a trial is necessary. |
